About: Spirit, Guts, and Heart

There's a quote in a movie that I have always loved where a father is talking to his son, and he says: "You and me, Spirit and Guts." In this particular instance the young man is trying to learn to ride a bike and his dad is trying to illustrate that together they can accomplish anything.

This Blog is dedicated to my little boy (Spirit), his unwavering mother (Heart), and is a therapeutic tool for me (Guts).

In recent developments, our family has been rocked by some rather Earth-shattering news. A couple of months ago Spirit's teacher decided to have him take some tests, because he was having some troubles in speech. His speech teacher then contacted us to have a "one-on-one" meeting. After a sleepless night or two I met with the Speech Therapist. She was nice, talked about where he had scored on some of the preliminary testing, but there was something she wasn't getting to, and it made me more and more nervous as we continued through the conversation. We eventually landed on Autism, Asperger's, or High Functioning Autism.

My heart fell into my shoes and my stomach settled somewhere near my throat. This wonderful lady was trying to cushion the blow as much as she could, she gave us some "assessments" to take home, and after three or four of them, it became apparent that there were some obvious similarities.

It's a cruel trick really..."We'd like you to assess your child's behavior, and every question you answer yes to brings you one step closer to Autism."

After a few more questionnaires Heart and I decided that it was time to call in an expert for and evaluation. It confirmed what we had already suspected, HFA or AS. This blog are the musings, miseries, and thoughts, of a Dad trying to make sense of this life, and living with this disorder. Hopefully it is entertaining, insightful, and possibly informational.
